Transponder Keys
Transponder keys (a portmanteau of transmitter and responder) include an electronic chip in their heads. When the key is inserted into an automobile equipped with transponder tech, the chip sends out an unintentional message to a receiver located near the ignition switch. If the chip is programmed to send this signal, it will cause the engine to turn on. Transponder chips are designed to prevent car theft and that is why the majority of modern cars use them.
During World War II, coded messages were transmitted via radio frequencies in order to determine if an aircraft was hostile or friendly. General Motors created the first transponder key in 1985, for its Corvette. Since then, they've been standard on most new vehicles and are also retrofitted into older models.
If you have a car equipped with this kind of security system, make sure you always keep a spare transponder key at hand, as it only works only if the chip has been scanned correctly. However, this isn't foolproof and some have discovered methods to fool the transponder system, including tutorials and kits that show how to bypass it using electrical relays and wiring.
Proximity keys
Proximity keys are the newest keyless entry technologies, which are becoming more popular on a variety of vehicles. The key fob is carried in a pocket or bag and used to unlock the car. The key fob communicates with the vehicle, removing immobilisers from the vehicle and permitting it to start.
There are some disadvantages to proximity key systems, however. If the key fob becomes damaged or lost, it cannot be used to start your car. A locksmith or dealership will have to replace it, and this can be expensive. The fobs are also powered by batteries, and so they'll have to be replaced regularly.
Another drawback of proximity keys technology is that it disrupts the cause-and-effect loop we're familiar with when using physical keys. With a traditional key, when you touch the lock and it opens, you know you have the key. With proximity-sensing keys, you'll need to be within a certain distance of the vehicle to activate it.

Keyless Entry Systems
The days of storing a spare key outside the home are long gone and landlords can offer tenants better security by installing a keyless entry system. These systems are synced with back-end programs, allowing landlords to keep track of the process of entry and exit. These systems also make it easier for tenants in a crisis to get into the property.
A keyless entry system sends encrypted signals to an inside receiver. The receiver receives the signal and unlocks your car or starts it. It can also detect a driver's presence and adjust the vehicle's settings in accordance with their preferences. It will automatically shut the door if, for example the driver has an item in his hand.
Certain keyless entry systems could be prone to attacks, even though they are generally very secure. For example a replay attack occurs when the original remote control signal is recorded and then sent again to the device at a later point. This can be avoided by incorporating an algorithm into the keyless entry system to ensure that every transmission is different from previous ones.
Another advantage of a keyless entry system is that it does not require the replacement of locks following every tenant's move. It's costly to change locks after every tenant turnover, so it makes sense that landlords cut down on this expense as much as possible. With a keyless system all you have to do is reset the code. This is a lot quicker and less costly than replacing the lock.
